DEDMAN SCHOLARS PROGRAM
The Dedman Distinguished Scholars Program at The University of Texas at Austin is excited to share our sixth annual Dedman Essay Competition for 2025.
We are offering five scholarships to high school sophomores and juniors in the amount of $1,500, $1,000, $500, and two $250 awards. The scholarship has no prerequisites regarding ethnicity, economic background, or extracurricular activities and there is no fee to participate.
The contest requires applicants to submit a 750-800 word essay at our website dedmanessay.com on the following prompt:
Conviction is often hailed as the courage to stand by one’s beliefs in the face of opposition. But when does conviction become obstinance? Is there a point at which standing firm in one’s principles ceases to be a virtue and instead becomes resistance to growth? History, philosophy, and your own personal experience may show that the distinction between these two qualities is not always clear. In a well-argued and compelling essay, explore the fine line between conviction and obstinance.
Additionally, this year we will host two writing workshops to help students write and revise their essays before submission. These workshops will be held over Zoom. More information about the workshops, including dates and times, will be posted on the website.
The competition has opened, and the deadline for submission is April 30 at 11:59 PM.
