Superintendent Message – March 2019
Blanco ISD is excited to announce that the district will hold a Bond Proposition the May. The bond will provide $1,350,000 in funding to meet multiple district needs including district-wide maintenance, technology enhancements, and athletic complex upgrades. These potential bond funds would be put into immediate action to ensure a number of the proposed improvements would benefit students during the 2109-2020 school year. The success of this bond will set the foundation for more efficient facilities that provide better environments for students to grow and learn.
Under present law, no increase in the tax rate is required to fund this bond issuance. Informational meetings detailing plans for the potential funding will be held over the next several weeks. Details can be found on the Blanco ISD website: www.blancoisd.org.
In our continuing effort to reach out to the community, we have formed a group called Partners, Class of 2019. Partners’ consists of 20 community members that will participate in a year-long exchange with our school district. I look forward to giving our Partners members an up close and personal look at the great things going on behind the scenes of our school district!
The Blanco Education Foundation (BEF) is currently accepting grant applications for the 2019 – 2020 school year. These grants are available to individual Blanco ISD employees and/or teams of employees who are involved in the direct or indirect instruction of students. Proposals must be innovative and engaging in nature. Applications will be accepted through April 19th. I am very excited about the possibilities that the Blanco Education Foundation provides for our school district. Please remember that the Education Foundation always accepts donations.
The 86th Texas Legislative Session is in full swing at the state capital. For the first time in many years, our Texas legislators seem to be committed to investing in public education and reforming school finance. The House and the Senate have both proposed bills that would improve student achievement, teacher quality and address property tax relief. Although no final decisions have been made, both sides have vowed to improve teacher pay. Mr. Kolek, Superintendent at Johnson City ISD, and I met with legislators last week to discuss how the proposed House Bill 3 affects Blanco County schools. We will continue to be proactive in our efforts to provide the quality of education that our students deserve.
April is the month when state assessment season begins in earnest. The STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) test will be administered to students in grades 3 – 8, while high school students participate in End-of-Course tests. The state assessments are a series of standardized tests that measure the academic progress of each student. I know that our students are prepared and will excel as they take these state assessments. Blanco students continue to excel in co-curricular and extracurricular activities. The elementary and middle school UIL Academic teams continued their run of district championships. The boys and girls athletes continue to dominate their competition. FFA students competed successfully in many stock shows and judging events. The Panther band had many students advance to state and won another Sweepstakes award. The high school UIL Academic teams are honing their skills and preparing for competition this month. The One Act Play advanced out of district with an awesome performance. Finally, many of our students are donating their time for community service projects or serving the community in many ways. It is a great time to be a Blanco Panther!
As we look back on the past with pride, we look forward to the future with promise.
